Although Wall Of Voodoo was already a heavy influence on Ron Cameron by this time, in ’85 he stumbled on this 12 inch vinyl single of ‘Mexican Radio’ (record cover art shown above). The b-side was a bizarre recording experiment called ‘There’s Nothing On This Side’. This is where the “nothing” of “Nothing Is Cool” was most likely born. The Twilight Zone style radio announcer voice on the song keeps repeating “there’s nothing on this side…” and “nothing!” throughout the entire seven minute song. Ron says he was completely freaked out over this song and couldn’t get that “nothing!” out of his head for years to come.
